New Delhi, October 4: The European Union voted on Friday to impose tariffs on Chinese battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The Commission stated that this decision is a further step towards completing its anti-subsidy investigation against China.

According to reports, the EU plans to impose tariffs of up to 45 percent on these electric vehicles.

In a statement, the EU announced, "Today, the European Commission's proposal to impose definitive countervailing duties on imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from China has received the necessary support from EU Member States for the adoption of tariffs."

Additionally, the EU indicated that it will continue to seek an alternative solution with China that would be "fully WTO-compatible and adequate in addressing the injurious subsidization" identified by the Commission's investigation.

Experts believe this EU move could present a significant opportunity for India, a prominent automobile manufacturer.

Earlier this year, in May, the US administration also implemented heavy tariffs on various Chinese products, including electric vehicles and batteries, as part of what it described as a protectionist measure to reduce trade imbalances. The US emphasized that these tariffs are essential to counteract the influx of low-cost Chinese products into global markets.
